Rwanda Specialty Coffee

Rwandan coffees are often some of the softest, sweetest and most floral coffees in East Africa – delicately balanced and quickly winning the hearts of coffee lovers around the world.

The first coffee trees in Rwanda were planted in 1904, and coffee exports began around 1917. High altitudes and constant rainfall create the prerequisites for the quality potential of coffee beans to be very high.

About a portion of the country's export earnings now come from the coffee industry, so this industry has recently become a vehicle for the government to improve the socio-economic conditions of Rwandan citizens. There has been an explosion in the number of coffee washing and processing stations built across the country, giving the 500,000 small farms easier access to resources and training.

One of the most important challenges of Rwandan coffee is the "potato" defect – a bacterium that can make coffee beans smell and taste like raw potatoes. However, the dominance of old trees of the Bourbon variety, and the combination of high altitudes and rich soil, ensures that Rwand-ese coffee beans are still some of the best on the market.
